Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri founded Minhaj University on September 18, 1986, as one of the educational branches of Minhaj-ul-Quran Worldwide, an international educational and welfare organization.

It has two campuses, one in Lahore's Model Town Extension and the other in Lahore's Camps Township. The Punjab government granted the university's charter for issuing degrees on October 15, 2005.
